Posted by ifreak

ChartApple reported on Wednesday that they’ve topped one billion dollars of sales in the first quarter of the year as sales of Macintosh computers climbed more than 50 percent.

The tech giant said it earned 1.05 billion dollars or 1.16 dollars per share on revenues of 7.51 billion dollars for the quarter as compared to 770 million dollars, or 87 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs was delighted to report 43 percent revenue growth and stated it was the strongest March quarter revenue and earnings in Apple’s history. He also stated that Apple has gained strong momentum to launch new products, with its over 17 billion dollars of revenue for the first half of their fiscal year.

3G iPhone Debuts

Posted by ifreak

iPhoneMark your calendars, the 3G iPhone debuts on the 9th of June. With its highly anticipated 3G version, Apple expects to sell 10 million iPhones this year. The 3G iPhone will be the “first of an impressive way of new products” from Apple, wrote analysts. They’re also looking to launch an updated Mac laptop and iPod during the Apple conference scheduled in San Francisco from the 9th to 13th of June.

With the 3G iPhone’s release in early June, the 2.5G version will have slight modifications of a “minor casing change” and an expected price dip to between US$299 and $349, compared to the current price of US$399.

These predictions are in line with a February prediction in which analysts announced that 3G iPhones will be announced by the midyear. They also included said that the 3G iPhone will help Apple’s target of 10 million iPhones this year. Despite strong sales of the iPhone, Apple’s iPhone inventories were not enough to meet the strong demand. Apple has since acknowledged this fact, which in the past has led to outsiders to conclude that Apple is reducing current iPhone stock to prepare release of the 3G iPhone. Speculations of increased sales could lead to the acceleration of the iPhone 2.0 software, which was released earlier last month as a beta and will be delivered by iPhone users by the end of June.

The iPhone 2.0 software provides enterprise applications to iPhones, including push e-mail support through the Microsoft Exchange mail server. It also includes an SDK (software developer kit) for developers to write iPhone applications. Native Exchange support on the iPhone could boost its adoption, the iPhone SDK should deliver many third-party applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch by the end of this year. The SDK has already been downloaded 200,000 times and is being used in one-third of Fortune 500 companies to develop applications for the iPhone, according to Apple.

The exact date of when it’ll hit Singapore shores remains a question. I”m excited to see where this goes.

iPhone Virus

Posted by ifreak

iPhone VirusWith so many things that are possible with your iPhone; from reading a document to playing games on the internet, it’s little wonder that the iPhone is alot more susceptible to viruses than compared to most phones. With hundreds of viruses lurking out there in the cyberworld, users can fell prey easily without first hand knowledge. Viruses can be spread through different avenues like traditional downloads, MMS or email attachments and Bluetooth. Before the iPhone came out, mobile phones running Symbian or Windows and Palm softwares were the most vulnerable, but as soon as the iPhone hit the market, it became the new target for hackers.

Recently, a team of security analysts discovered a vulnerability in Safari that allowed them to take control of the iPhone two weeks after the scheduled release. Web pages which contained malicious codes which were accessed through the iPhone’s Safari browser compromised the iPhone severely. Fortunately, the vulnerability has since been patched via iPhone software updates.

Like a normal OS, the iPhone is never safe from hackers.

Here are some good advice on how to prevent that virus from getting into your iPhone.

Change your Bluetooth settings: Users should turn off Bluetooth when they’re not using it. Go into hidden mode and most importantly, change your phone’s default name because hackers will usually go for known vulnerabilities first. New phones may come with Bluetooth turned on as a default, so make sure you double check your settings. You can access your iPhone’s Bluetooth settings by going to Settings > General > Bluetooth.

Don’t click on it: This is the general rule of thumb when dealing with something foreign. Got a dubious mail or MMS attachment, the safest way is not to open it. Exercise common sense.

Install a security software: Granted that the iPhone is relatively new, but a security software that prevents and scans for viruses should be in the works and out in the near future.

Good luck, happy safe surfing with your iPhone.

Mac Buyers’ Guide

Posted by ifreak

AppleFor every tech product you buy these days, expect a new, improved version within the end of the week. I’m sure many of you are familiar with this infuriating experience because unlike any other products, prices of Apple products generally hold its own price for the entire product cycle, rarely dropping in price. For example, an entry level Macbook Pro will cost SGD $3,088 at release and will remain so until it is replaced by a newer model. Hence, if you decide to buy the Macbook Pro 8 months later as opposed to buying it on its release, what you are really doing is paying $3,088 for technology that is 8 months old and is no longer cutting edge. Sounds foolish doesn’t it?

In a bid to assist consumers to make better decisions, MacRumors have come up with a Mac Buyers’ Guide. With a listing full of past and future products, industry rumors and speculations, the guide offers insight and hindsight to the latest products. Been wanting to buy that Macbook Pro that you’ve eyeing for so long? Maybe holding out for a newer model might be a wiser decision.

Consumers looking to buy a new Apple product should definitely check this guide out.

Microsoft softwares on iPhone

Posted by ifreak

MicrosoftBe prepared to see Microsoft products on the iPhone as the tech giant plans to offer software for it. In a recent interview, Microsoft expressed that their developers are considering a variety of possibilties that include Office functionality on Apple’s iPhone, which is sorely lacking in that particular department.

The reason why Microsoft is focusing on the iPhone is probably due to Apple’s release of the software development kit earlier this month. The iPhone SDK, which was released in beta aims to let developers have access to the same tools Apple developers used for building applications.

With the exception of Apple, Microsoft makes more software for the Mac than any other vendor. Among its most popular softwares is its Office suite for the Mac.

With plans to release the final version of the SDK this June, along with newer versions of the iPhone(3G), Apple sets to storm the world in style. The 3G iPhone contains the same platform and specifications as the iPhone, minus the cellular and network component.

One of the elements of the iPhone upgrade that should prove helpful to Microsoft is its support for the Microsoft’s Exchange e-mail server. Apple has confirmed that they have licensed Microsoft’s ActiveSync protocol for connecting the iPhone’s e-mail client directly to an Exchange server. As a result, email and contacts can be easily pushed to the iPhone. Look out for Microsoft, inside your iPhone.

Sprint - iPhone Dethroner?

Posted by ifreak

iPhone DethronerApple’s iPhone will face stiff competition in the battle of the smartphones in the next coming months. Sprint Nextel and Samsung unveiled a touch-screen phone equipped with a 3-inch display, multimedia capabilities and a QWERTY keypad named “The Instinct.”

Available this summer, it represents Sprint’s direction of producing devices which fulfills the needs of the consumers of tomorrow; from a wireless carrier: voice, data and multimedia services. The Instinct carries the same look as Apple’s iPhone, though the latter has a larger screen at 3.5″. Both devices are similar in size and weight. The Instinct has GPS-enabled audio and visual turn-by-turn driving instructions, giving users real time driving directions.

For entertainment, it can access Sprint’s video-programming network, which includes sports, news and TV shows, and the Sprint Music Store, which sells tunes for 99 cents each.

The Instinct, which is exclusive to Sprint, runs on the carrier’s high-speed CDMA EV-DO Rev A network for text messaging, e-mail, and connecting to the Web. The smartphone has a 2-megapixel camera for still pictures and video recording and comes with a 2-GB MicroSD memory card that’s upgradeable to 8 GB. The device supports the Bluetooth wireless standard for connecting to peripheral devices but does not support Wi-Fi for connecting to the Web. The iPhone, on the other hand, supports Wi-Fi.

Whether the Sprint will manage to dethrone the iPhone with it’s no frills concept remains to be seen.

iPhone to make way for 3G iPhone

Posted by ifreak

O2 iPhoneTel com service operators with exclusive rights to sell Apple’s iPhone are prepared on making significant losses on unsold stock as they rush to clear shelves on the debut of a new, faster version this summer.

Numerous distributors like O2 and T-mobile are reporting an oversight in estimating the number of first version of iPhones that will sell in Europe. However, they may recoup the losses in the monthly revenue from people who bought the devices at a cheaper rate.

O2 announced on Tuesday that they were cutting the price of the iPhone by more than a third from £269 to £169 and 2 weeks ago T-mobile made an even drastic cut from €399 to €99. O2 said the recent price cut was part of a marketing strategy for maximizing success of the iPhone in UK.

According to reports made by mobile analyst, CCS Insight, iPhone sales has slowed significantly in all European markets where the 3G version of the iPhone is soon to be available in June.

Sources has claimed that Apple has already placed an order with its Asian suppliers to produce 200,000 of the 3G iPhone by the end of May, rising to 2 million. The new 3G iPhone may also usher a change in the way Apple strikes distribution deals. Analysts predicts that Apple will eventually halt its policy of favoring one tel com operator in a given region or territory.

FringFring today became the world’s first mobile VoIP application to be made publicly available for the iconic apple iPhone, enabling users to talk, chat and interact with other Fring users (“fringsters”) and all of their online communities, using their iPhone’s WiFi connection.

This pre-release version is designed to both answer demand from iPhone-owning would-be fringsters and at the same time enable Fring to learn about user experience, benefit from early feedback and influence the R&D process of the full release version, due for launch later this year.

For iPhone users this beta enables them to sample Fring and how it works on an “opened” Apple handset. Fring users also will be able to make calls or send instant messages over Wi-Fi from their same lists of online contacts.

All you need to start enjoying the pre-released Fring for iPhone is an “opened” iPhone with the Installer and WiFi access. And, just like all other Fring versions, Fring on iPhone is free to download, free to use!
